REFLECTION (JULY 06, 2015)

What I liked the most
Our facilitator said that in order to achieve a successful star-up, one should remember HELF. Yes, I know some might be thinking about the word “HELP” but take note, they are two different things. HELF in Technopreneurship stands for H- Human Resources, E- Environment, L- Laws and Policies, F- Financial Resources; these are necessary for a technopreneurship business venture. A venture would not be successful if any of the four mentioned above is lacking, because each has a role to play in the technopreneurship ecosystem. So let us start with H which stands for Human Resources, in any technopreneurship venture there should be a researcher- one who is responsible for innovating new ideas, developer- one who is responsible for implementing new innovations, financers and marketing people now these are the necessary human resources you’ll need in your venture. Without these people it will be hard for your technopreneurship venture to be a success. Next is, E- Environment, another important component of HELF is the environment. If one will start a technopreneurship venture one should have the proper environment for the venture for example incubation hubs. Next would be L- Laws and Policies, of course, in a business there should be the licensing of your products so that you have intellectual property over it. Lastly is F- Financial Resources, this component is important because you will need money for your venture of course. You need to find funding agencies that will support your technopreneurship venture so that it will be successful. As mentioned in my previous reflections, our facilitator reminds us that Technopreneurship is important, because one good reason is that Technopreneurship generates more jobs. This means that if there were more technopreneurs and more start-up business ventures then the unemployment rate of the country would lower and another positive effect of this is that the economy of the country would improve. In my own opinion, this is one of the greatest benefits the country can have if start-up businesses were more abundant in the country. Entrepreneurs are the people who enter into new and pioneering ventures. It involves whole-brained and uses both the left brain which is logical and right brain which is creative and entrepreneurship is starting up a new business. In the future, my desire profession is to become an entrepreneur, but when I knew the meaning of entrepreneur well I can say that I am not fit into this profession since it requires both left and right brain and as I know I have a left brain only. Sir Gamboa also discussed to us the course model called SEED. This course model is very important to us especially those people who taking technopreneurship subject. Based on the discussion, S stands for self mastery, E stands for Environment Mastery, E stands for Enterprise Mastery and lastly D stands for development of business plan. I learned from our discussion that the technopreneurship subject is come up with this model. It will really help you and will give you further information about yourself on how can you handle things like this and those connected to the business venture you are into. Knowing yourself is the best key to know what you need to do, because if you do not know yourself then what is the point? Knowing one’s self is very important especially if you are putting up a business or starting a business, because if you so not know yourself, then you would not know if you can handle the pressure in having a business, if you can make your business successful, if you know your limitations, if you know what to do and not to do. Starting a business is really hard, but as long as you know yourself even if you are not smart don’t have a high emotional quotient or adversity quotient like mention above you will least likely fail. But nevertheless, continue to pursue and make it true.  So in order to understand this course model, Sir Gamboa elaborates to us of what is SEED curriculum. Based on the discussion, self mastery passion comes from knowing yourself. It brings passion, when you know yourself, you know what you want and do not want. I learned from this that in order to become a successful technopreneur in the future, you should have a mastery of you are or you should know yourself in and out so that you will know your passion and you know what you want or do not want. According also to the discussion of this, it does not require a high Intellectual Quotient (IQ) but if you have a very high IQ well it is good and it’s beneficial to you. But it requires or there is a need of high Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Adversity Quotient (AQ). Emotional Quotient (EQ) is the ability of an entrepreneur to connect to other people and be able to feel other emotionally and Adversity Quotient (AQ) is the ability to rise up after the failure that has been encountered. It is also explained in our discussion that being a self-mastered person should be performer, epicure, and boss and has a whole-brained and has a personal vision and knows strengths and weaknesses. They are really needed to support the ideas that have been created and in return they should also gain profit in the idea that they have invested on. Though some of these funding agencies does not just relay on the profit, they really believe on the idea that is why some of them is giving money support without any return expecting. A venture would not be successful if any of the four mentioned above is lacking, because each has a role to play in the Technopreneurship ecosystem. This component is important because you will need money for your venture of course.  Therefore, I conclude that I cannot be a self-mastered person because in the first place it requires high EQ and AQ and as I knew during the time that I took a test on Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Adversity Quotient (AQ), I have got only average on Emotional Quotient and moderate on Adversity Quotient and so I am the person who has not mastered yet in myself. The second is E or Environment Mastery in SEED says that it is all about generating business ideas and seeking opportunities out from his or her environment through serendipity walks, crises, trends and etc. I have learned from this that the possibilities of generating ideas are most likely to be found through the following. First is the serendipity walks, this an ordinary walk like walking on the field in USeP and suddenly you stumbled down and come up and generate with an idea. The second one is crisis like you encountered crisis or failures; this may lead to an opportunity. The third is trends opportunities and innovative ideas that can be found in current trends and fashion. And lastly are your hobbies or interests, personal skills and experiences. All of these are the factors and possibilities of generating business ideas and seeking for opportunities. I learned also that being an environment-mastered person should understand his/her industry where he/she belong and many more. The third is E also which stands for Enterprise Mastery and from this, I knew that enterprise mastery should have an idea on how to run a business such as marketing, operations and so on. And being an enterprise-mastered person should understand and integrates the functions of management, human resource, operations and etc. The last is D stands for development of business plan that covers writing, presenting and defending and adding refinements to the presented business plan. I learned also the four types of entrepreneurship which are incremental, imitative, rent-seeking and innovative. As well as the characteristics of an entrepreneur such as hardworking, self-confident, builds for the future and a lot more. For an example, the company needs a person with good skills on something. The days when college was only accessible to the rich and elite are over. College has become more affordable and a lot of pressure has been put on students to attend college in order to find a good job. The result? You have to be good at something in order to contribute something of value to a company. People with computer skills (or at the very least computer proficient) will always be in high demand. Learning these types of technological skills will always be in your best interest because companies leverage technology in their offices in order to be more efficient, and if you can integrate well with that, you’ve got something good going for you. And the other reason why people don't get a job is because they don't have no interview skills. They will ask the hard hitting questions. Why should we hire you? What do you bring to the table? Tell me about yourself (that throws off a lot of people) What’s your greatest weakness (obviously reframe this question when you answer), etc. There are a ton of resources online you can tap into in order to prepare. Use our trusty friend Google. You must prepare. Have all your answers ready to go when the question is asked. Be prepared to give examples of things you’ve listed on your resume. When you meet the interviewer, don’t give the limp fish handshake or the bone crushing one. Environment Mastery will help a person like us: children, students on deciding upon something like on which field he belongs, what are his expertise, what are his passion, and what he really loves to do. And also he or she will perceive those opportunities in his environment and not the dilemmas. He or she should be aware of the things in his environment and should always look for positive prospect and not by a negative aspect. It also helps us on how to master our environment and the things that we need to do to expose and reveal our prospective when we engage in turning out to be a technopreneur. And about the serendipity walk. I could somehow do it because your instructor instructed us to observe in different places which are the malls, fast food, hotel and schools within the Davao City. And he told us to find a problem and create an alternative ways so that we can solve it. By this I can say that I have observed different factors that the environment runs. Also I learned that there are things that need to be more seen by people. There are also things that people do not do not care about. People must know how to use their creative minds in creating new ideas that may help the community. And second is the crisis, this may lead us to an opportunity. We taught that crisis is always bad. But others do not know that sometimes create good things. It may be use to opportunity that may lead us to success.Personality and intelligence tests have long been valuable corporate tools. But the more recently discovered emotional intelligence is now starting to earn its place in the HR assessment tool-chest.
What is emotional intelligence?
Emotional intelligence is all about our ability to understand our own emotions and to interact harmoniously with those around us. Essentially, it has two elements: the intra-personal and the inter-personal. The intra-personal element is summed up by self-recognition. It describes our ability to recognize our own strengths and weaknesses, what motivates us, our values, and the ways in which we function. The inter-personal element is about how we manage conflict, about empathy, how we understand other people's emotions and whether we respond to them appropriately.
What are its benefits?
Emotional intelligence can be hugely important in the workplace, especially in terms of people-management. A manager whose emotional intelligence is weak will attempt to impose and dictate change, while a manager with strong emotional intelligence will be able to carry his team with him and allow them to drive that change. In fact, emotional intelligence is crucial in a whole range of daily situations. For instance, with the blizzard of emails growing constantly in the workplace, a person with high emotional intelligence might suggest a meeting or a video-conference to improve communications. Emotional intelligence is also important in sales, where it allows the seller to analyze the reactions of potential purchasers and arrange the sales process accordingly.
How to evaluate it?
The degree of corporate importance attached to emotional intelligence depends on the culture of a company. Some businesses focus mainly on technical ability, while others realize the importance of motivation, empathy and communication - and the problems their absence can cause. Emotional intelligence can be measured usingEmotional Quotient (EQ) tests. These can help companies to evaluate job applicants during recruitment or, used internally, can be used to encourage personnel and help them to progress. It's the employer's job to match the results to the qualities needed for the job vacancy.
EQ can it be improved?
We all have an inner core of emotional intelligence. But we also have an element of emotional intelligence which we acquire and either develop or fail to develop. That means we can train ourselves to improve certain aspects of that emotional intelligence, such as our willingness to listen, our empathy, and our ability to manage more consensually. The first step, though, is to realize that there is a need to improve. That realization is the key: without it there can be no progress.Adversity Quotient as “the capacity of the person to deal with the adversities of his life.
For many years, researchers have devoted a great deal of their studies to Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Quotient (EQ), which are considered to be determinants of success and superior accomplishment. Paul Stoltz introduced a new yet interesting & intriguing concept – Adversity Quotient (AQ), which tells how well one withstands adversity and his ability to triumph over it. In fact, more researches recently have shown that measurement of AQ is a better index in achieving success than IQ, education or even social skills. By understanding the concept of AQ we can better understand how we and others react to challenge and adversity in all aspects of our lives. In fact, how people respond to adversity is a strong indicator of ability to succeed in many endeavors. AQ is rooted in three sciences: psychoneuroimmunology, neurophysiology, and cognitive psychology. They are its building blocks. Hundreds of research studies lend support to the role AQ plays in determining one’s ability to triumph over obstacles. To measure AQ, Stoltz developed an assessment instrument called Adversity Response Profile (ARP).
The Adversity Response Profile is the only scientifically-grounded tool in existence for measuring how effectively one deals with adversity, or one’s AQ. AQ, according to him, is a valid predictor of one’s success, stress-threshold, performance, risk-taking, capacity for change, productivity, perseverance, improvement, energy, and health. I learned that we must always assess out AQ and EQ.

What I like  the least
People are the ones who controls their lives and should earn for their living, the government is just the helping aide here whenever the people need their help. Though these pictures found to be negative because of its effects, I found these as a way of informing us if ever we will be on the wrong way. These pictures will give us heads up if ever we intend to be out of our way and stopped on reaching our goals. Informative in the sense that our facilitator shares what he knew about Technopreneurship; he also shared some of experiences from his trips around the country and outside of the country. Our facilitator really points out that Technopreneurship is important and that it could help many who are currently unemployed. Environment like and incubator center, PSI some academic institutions where doing some research and development centers, Internet Access, geographic accessiblity, communication and many more services. An example of this environment is just like the business incubator in which in business speak is a company that helps new and start up companies to develop by providing services such as management training or office space. Business incubators differ from research and technology parks in their dedication to startup and early-stage companies. Research and technology parks, on the other hand, tend to be large-scale projects that house everything from corporate, government or university labs to very small companies. Most research and technology parks do not offer business assistance services, which are the hallmark of a business incubation program. However, many research and technology parks house incubation programs. The other letter in H.E.L.F is the letter L which stands for Laws and Policies. That includes the intellectual property rights which are right given to persons over the creations of their critical minds. The technology licensing office that manages in licensing, some trademarks and copyrighting of some intellectual property. And the Legal Services that requires all actions to be legal and precise. Some higher education institutions have faced legal action in the form of resolutions or lawsuits related to their IT accessibility. When both of these laws were passed, IT had not yet attained the prevalence that it now has throughout society, including education, and neither law explicitly mentions IT accessibility.  The Department of Education has issued guidance that states that its long-standing nondiscrimination requirements mean that when schools use technology to provide educational benefits, services, or opportunities, that technology must be fully accessible to students with disabilities.  Although accommodations or modifications can also be made to ensure equal access, these accommodation must ensure that the benefits of the educational program are provided to these students in an equally effective and equally integrated manner. Many colleges and universities have created policies related to accessibility. Some are specifically related to IT; others are more general.Information technology law provides the legal framework for collecting, storing, and disseminating electronic information in the global marketplace. Attorneys practicing in this area of the law represent individuals and businesses from all different industries. They help structure information technology transactions in a way that maximizes the client’s economic benefit while ensuring regulatory compliance. A great deal of emphasis is also placed on anticipating potential sources of dispute between the parties to a transaction, and crafting agreements that address these concerns, thereby reducing the risk of litigation. When disputes arise in the field of information technology that cannot be resolved outside of the court system, a lawyer specializing in these types of cases can prove a powerful advocate compared to a general legal practitioner. Information technology law firms tend to hire lawyers with practical experience working in the industry prior to entering the legal profession. Unemployment is a major problem in many countries in the world. The recession and the bad economy are making the process of finding a job even harder. Being unemployed for a long period of time may lead to depression, low self-esteem and problems in the family. But, for some it can be beneficial as well. However, you certainly don’t want to end up without a job for a long period of time. There are some tricks that can help you find a job in short notice. Having no job can be very stressful. First of all, you don’t have regular income, so that means no money for your personal needs, no money to pay for food, a house, a car, entertainment etc. Unemployment can also lead to depression and tough times for you and your family and friends as well. Being without a job can be the reason to a loss of identity and feeling worthless. Sometimes having no job is also connected to crimes, as people are finding alternative ways of obtaining money for survival. It can be a cause for a lot of diseases as well, and even suicide. Having no job means losing your social life and it can be a reason for constant boredom. No job means no money, bad credit loans for the unemployed are constant and people may become easily manipulated trying to earn something for a living. Being without a job can have a lot of disadvantages as well. But, have in mind that they are usually short-term and you will eventually have to find a job in order to lead a normal life. Having no job means having a lot of free time to do everything you want, anything that you were saying you would do if you had no job. It is the right time to start painting, writing a book, making music, exploring mountains etc. Being without a job also means that you don’t have to put up with your boss and boring colleagues. You are your own boss and you can start some business or do freelance jobs that are not restricted with getting early in the morning. You’ll have enough time to clean your house, spend more time with friends, and arrange your time however you want. There are many tricks that can help you find a job and grants for the unemployed. You should consider volunteering as a means of finding a job in the future. Start volunteering in an area that you are interested in. It will be fun and after a while, you may actually start being paid for your work. Or, if that is not the case, you can always put that experience in your CV. Expand your network. Ask all your friends, acquaintances and distant relatives if they or someone they know are looking for a worker. If you go to a job interview, prepare well and go there with a firm attitude like you already got the job.Unemployment is one of the major economics problems. People who are considered unemployed are those who are seeking work or laid off for more then a week. There are many different reasons why a person could be unemployed. Three of those causes are cyclical, structural and seasonal unemployment. The government tries to find solutions in order to reduce unemployment by making up policies. Cyclical unemployment is one of the causes that creates unemployment. When a person is cyclically unemployed, it means that the income is limited to the economic state and there are more jobs when economy is well however when it’s not the number of jobs available decrease. Also when people have less spending money it creates many cutbacks and loss of jobs. Therefore, this form of unemployment is usually temporary. When there is an economic growth, cyclical unemployment reduces. Structural unemployment is another cause that creates unemployment. As time goes on, consumer’s demand changes, which causes a growth in one industry, a decrease in another or it may lead to a complete shut down of a industry. And even though jobs will increase in growing industry, they will decrease or disappear in another for example, Atlantic Canada where demand for ship building was no longer needed. Thus structural unemployment causes regional unemployment because certain areas are unable to attract new industries when their old ones are shut down. Seasonal unemployment mostly depends on the climate and therefore varies in the regions of Canada. In the winter time industries like fishing, construction, and tourism struggle in certain regions. However, demand in some industries like snow cleaning will increase. The other examples where people could be seasonally unemployed are farming, lumbering and etc. People who work in those industries are usually employed for 6 month and unemployed for the other six when
Unemployment is serious problem that our government faces. Our leaders are trying their utmost best to solve it wisely. If it is not solved sooner, a social revolution may take plea to have its solution. The main cause of unemployment is the repaid growth of populations. Since independence the populations of India has increased by threes times its total. When people multiply, there raises the problems of unemployment and it becomes difficult for government to provide employment to a sufficient number of people. As a matter of principle it becomes the duty of government to provide employment to all as far as possible and we are blessed that our government is taking keen interest to solve this series problem of today. As the growth of populations is going unchecked, jobs and services in a given field commonly remains insufficient. When our youths do not find employment despite their best efforts, they get irritated. There are three types of unemployment, viz., labor class who are not educated, educated persons without possessing any technical qualifications and technical persons such as engineers
In case of labor class there are lakhs of people who earn their livelihood daily and gather themselves on some specific place just to find daily employment somewhere. They are not disappointed to a great extends. Sometimes they find employment and sometimes they return to their houses without finding employment. They are habituated to adjust themselves with the circumstance, though they also become irradiated and disappointed sometimes when problems of food and clothing arise before them. This is the case with general labor of the cities. As regards the agriculture labor of the village, they’re also not disappointed to a great extent as they find seasonal employment very easily in the farms and fields of big farmers.
Since the number of educated persons is increasing day by day, we are not in a position to afford a venue of work for this growing number. As such our educated persons are very much disappointed when they wander dark roads in search of employment. As they do not possess any technical and practical training, they only try to find clerical job which are not sufficiently according to the increasing number of educated persons. It has become a very ticklish problem
As regards educated persons, possessing technical qualifications, they tend to be frustrated when they do not find employment despite their best qualifications. There can be in no two opinions that they find their employment very easily on the merits of their technical qualifications, but according to the increasing number of such educated persons also become victims of unemployment. Education is a very good thing and one must be educated but the irony of it is that when we offer educations to young people we are not in position to offer jobs to them. This
The educated youth should change their mind also and they should think of self-employment, rather than searching jobs and services hither and there wasting their energy. In this way very serious problem of unemployment may be saved to a great extent. Unemployment is the one constant throughout history. Despite changing technology, the underlying principles of why unemployment occurs remain the same. It’s also what continues to this day. The three main causes of unemployment are economic conditions, new technology, and increasing populations.Economic conditions are the main factor in unemployment. The economic crash caused unemployment to rise dramatically, and the same has been true of every economic slump throughout history. An economic crash causes businesses to fold and posts to disappear. If there isn’t enough money coming into a company, it can no longer afford to pay its employees.Once a company fails to pay its employees it has no choice but to let them go. Sometimes, it reduces its size in waves of redundancies or it simply shuts down.New technology also has an impact. As conventional tasks become more automated and more convenient, some employees find their posts obsolete. With no reason to continue paying them, they lose their jobs as the job simply disappears. It’s why the Swing Riots occurred in. Workers fought against the introduction of threshing machines which would make many traditional jobs disappear. In the 21st century, the main threats are robotics and increasingly intelligent computers. Professional filing systems which require teams of people to maintain are now on a single computer server controlled by a single person. This is the form of unemployment which happens during prosperous times when companies can afford to invest in new technologies.Increasing populations often lead to unemployment at a slower rate. The numbers of unemployed have increased over the past few decades as the population has accelerated. To an extent, the increasing demand for goods and trade balances out the population increase, but businesses often fail to deal with the short-term consequences.Initially, many young humans aren’t yet old enough to need the economy to enlarge itself. It will take at least 20 years before the economy needs to respond to growing demand. Children generally don’t figure in the size of the economy or the need for jobs, on a large scale. It’s only when they become adults things start to change. And it doesn’t always keep pace with the number of adults in society. There are simply not enough employment roles for the number of applicants.New technology and an increasing population generally go hand-in-hand. If technology remained the same the increasing population wouldn’t matter as the jobs would form naturally. The rescinding in the number of roles from multiple sides overwhelms the employment market and we finish with a shortfall in jobs.Unemployment seems like a complicated issue as people attempt to take complicated formulae into account. Really, it’s caused by the same three things it has always been caused by. Poor economic conditions, new technological advances, and an increasing population have and always will continue to perpetuate the problem of unemployment.
Causes of unemployment
The main cause of unemployment in many countries is competition in the labor market, as there are few employment opportunities. This leads to a situation where for every available opportunity, there are more than one qualified individuals. This means that when one gets employment, others will lack employment. Currently increased technology shifts production from labor intensive to capital intensive. When these machines replace workers, they lack employment hence contributes to unemployment.
Effects of unemployment
Unemployment causes social and economic effects, which turn out to be a problem to society. The poverty index among the unemployed is high since these individuals do not have a source of income. On the social front, it increases illegal means of earning livelihoods. In a place where unemployment is on the rise, such a country has high cases of robberies, gambling, prostitution and bribery. This is a reason why unemployment contributes to social insecurities.Unemployment leads to loss of resources, and especially human resources. Unemployed individuals are unproductive, which means the economy does not utilize their production abilities. In such an economy growth of different economic sectors will be slow. These sectors and especially the tertiary sector do not get enough funding as the available funds are not sufficient to finance the sector. In such an economy, the rate of self-employment is low since they do not save money; hence there is little capital available for investments. High unemployment rate makes many employers pay less for labor. In such an economy, value of labor is less than it should be since employers will want to take advantage of the unemployed.

3 IDIOTS REFLECTION

Assuming you’ve watched the movie "3 IDIOTS", your reflections on the 3 characters, which one would you choose?

Farhan Qureshi
In the movie, 3 Idiots, Farhan Qureshi is someone who is captivated in the world of lenses. His passion is to capture precious moments – for humans and for wildlife. He loves photography so much that he wants to be an assistant of a famous photographer in Brazil. However, those dreams were somehow impossible for him. It is because he is also someone who follows his father’s wishes. Instead of grabbing the opportunity to be what he wants to be, he chose to comply to his father’s demand, which is to become an engineer.Among all the casts, he was the one who made me think of having the right path to go and build my own future and follow what my heart truly desires. He is the only child of a middle class family. Given that birth he was already conserved to be an engineer by his father. He was pressured by his own family that is why he took engineering at Imperial College of Engineering. His parents, especially his father, really worked hard and did everything to make sure that their son will be a successful engineer someday to the point that they installed an air conditioner to Farhan’s room to make him comfortable while studying. His father did all of this because he expected his son to be a rich man in the future. Although he was lucky for being one of the students who passed the entrance exam over thousands of applicants in Imperial College of Engineering, his heart still stayed to his true passion – photography. His dream was to be a wildlife photographer but his father did not put his aspiration to consideration. If you are a college student like me or if you were a student before, it is possible to have a classmate who was just forced to take a degree instead of following his true passion by his parents. Let us face it, money is essential especially in these times but the reason why some professionals earn large amounts of money is not because of their professions but it is their willingness and passion to what they are doing. Let us take note that not all graduates of engineering courses or other degrees that is said to lead you to a high-paying job becomes successful. This makes me realize that it is not the profession that matters but it is where your passion is. Hiding his feeling of disappointment, he attended the Imperial College of Engineering half-heartedly. There, he met aspiring engineers who are trying their best to be successful. He also met two people which later became his best friends, and even labelled as 3 idiots. With them, he experienced all the foolishness he never thought he could do. But this acts taught him a lot of lessons, lessons which made a great impact in his life. His life in college is not that easy. For the reason that they always get in trouble, they are also hot in the eye of their director and often call them idiots. And just because they always hang out with their friend, Rancho, their director always asked them to stay away from him. But then, Farhan couldn’t do it because his friend is one of his precious friends and that is the reason why he can’t leave him. He knows too well that being around with Rancho can’t bring him down. Rancho is his inspiration and he respects him a lot. Even though the news reached his father, which got Mr. Qureshi very furious, he never left them. Dealing with the situation of Farhan, from the day he was born, his family has already plans for his future career and it is to be an engineer. His father worked hard and expect too much that his only son will be an engineer someday that is why Farhan took up engineering at the Imperial College of Engineering. His father thinks that to be an engineer, it will give his son great success, glory and riches. Photography is what Farhan really enjoys to do, where he is so compassionate to give his best shot in capturing imageries. However, it is very contradicting to his father’s will so he still follow what his father’s dream and sacrifice his own happiness even if he was suffering to death. There comes Rancho, who inspired him to be telling his father what really makes him happy. Not money, not prestigious cars and houses, fame and high respect but a profession that will inspire him to achieve success and a passion that will lead him to excellence. At first, his father was very angry because Rancho influenced his son, but Farhan really tried to convince his father not in a drastic suicidal note but with love and so much respect to his father. In the end, his father realized everything so they have a happy ending. When your hobby becomes your profession, the passion becomes your profession. Fulfillment, joy, happiness and love will be the result of passion. Following your aspiration for years, you will surely become somebody one day. Not long after, his friends knew that he desires photography. With them knowing this, they encouraged him to pursue his desired career. However, Farhan knew that he could not bring himself to chase his dreams because of the fear to his father. But as they continue to struggle for their lives, had ups and downs, he realized the important things in life. Farhan realized that fear was ahead of him. He began to understand that doing things without passion will not do any good; instead, it will make things worse and would only cause depression. And with this new confidence, he had also gained the courage to talk to his father about his career. Though he had doubts about it, Farhan dared to defy his father. Tangled in the heated argument, he stood firm on what he believed. Feelings were pouring as he tried to defend his decision. And finally, his father gave in to his decision and agreed to support him in all the things that he needed. The little step he took, the courage he built, and the confidence he gained, made him overcome fear and face the reality. And by overcoming fear, he had truly found his happiness. Despite of everything he had been through, he was able to pursue his passion and became someone who he wanted to be. Through this, I can roughly say that my life can be compared to Farhan. Not minding what I want just to fulfil what the elders, or should I say, my parents wanted for me. Well, it’s not like they’re totally controlling my life. I still have my own choice, and sometimes, they still waits for my decision before taking into action. Basically, it’s just that, most of my actions were based from what they were saying. What does a girl like me can do? I’m inside their wall, dependent to them in terms of needs, still studying and don’t have a job. Of course, I have to obey them, not just for respect but also an obligation as a daughter. In the story, Farhan’s parents bought him what he needed, even beyond what he needed. He is good at reading other people and bored by usual. He will also seldom do the same thing the same way; he is quick to turn one new interest after another. At the story he joins the Imperial College for the sake of his dad’s wish and will not reveal his interest in wild life photography. His dream was to be a wildlife photographer, unfortunately, since he was born, his fate has been determined by his parents to be an engineer, which is deemed to bring proud to his family. As Rancho said, Farhan loves Photography but got married to Technology. He studied technology just because of his love to his parents, who have spared all efforts to help him do his best in the entrance exam into ICE with a hope to have a brighter future. Farhan had no choice but abandon his passion for photography, choosing engineering according to his parents’ desire. Finally, with the help of Rancho, Farhan realized where his passion lay, daring to chase his dream as a wildlife photographer. Though a job as wildlife photographer cannot bring him as much money as a career in engineering, Fahran has chances to live out his dream, capturing the beautiful moments life brought by. I was moved at the moment when Fahran tried to pursuade his father to let him follow his passion. The moment when his father, silently closing the new laptop – which is to be the gift on congratulation to Fahran’s job in Engineering, asked Farhan if it could be exchanged for a good camera for his passion, I was almost burst into tear. The lesson drawn from Farhan’s story is to follow your heart. Let’s turn your passion into profession. In exchange, he has to finish the degree. My parents too, treat me like that. They sometimes bought me things even without me asking. And so, I have to do my responsibility as a student and a daughter. Well, even without them telling me, I have to do it as exchange for everything they did for me. It was also shown in the movie that, Farhan’s future was decided by his parents, specifically his father. He badly wants him to be an engineer despite the fact that he loves photography. He obeyed his father, but in the end, he chose his passion. That kind of thing also happened to me. When I was about to go in college, I can’t decide properly what to choose, though I already told them that there is a certain course I’d like to study. In the end, my father told me to take a certain course, which I certainly obeyed. While I was starting to enjoy what I have chosen, they asked me to change course. But then, I declined their offer and continued studying on what they have chosen for me at the first place. And I think, that’s one thing that makes the difference between Farhan’s life and mine. At the end, he didn’t regret his decision, and I also didn’t regret mine. Cause no matter what happens, the parents are always there to support on what their child wants for their future.  Let’s talk about Farhan first.  Who was been force to get engineer course but inside of his heart is photography. Lots of people nowadays had this kind of situation, who was not able to tell the truth by their parents for they are afraid that their reasons might be rejected. Yes, it is true that parents know what best for their child but it doesn’t mean that they are always right, that they have to make decision for you on their own. They should ask first what you really want and if it is against their will they don’t have anything to do with it. After all you are the one bringing yourself and you are the one that would suffer. In every decision there is always two output the good and bad output. If it is good then it means that you made a right decision. I’m thankful that my parents always ask what I really wanted not just about the course that I’ve take in college but also about the things that I wanted in life, things that would make me happy. But that happiness doesn’t mean I go beyond the limit. It is the happiness that they know it is good for me - the three Idiots tries to convey to the viewers that passion is one of the things that we should consider in order to have a successful career and be able to fulfill our happiness. Since when I was just a high school that would the time that I discovered what my passion is - to be able to build my own business through discovering things that would be useful to make the world in the better place. Until when I came to decide which course should I take and what school should I choose. Lots of choices that came up into my mind but the number one criteria of it I should be involve in business. So as expected I went to the college that offers Business Administration and I decided to study in the University of Southeastern Philippines but unfortunately I was not able to avail it instead it was the Entrepreneurship course. Entrepreneurship was also in the field of business but when I get through on it I felt like there is something missing. I wanted to try something new that I’m able to assure that I can easily get job and someday I can be able to build my own business. The second choice that I’ve made is in the field of Information Technology. It doesn’t really talks about business but through making website and system I can be able to sell it. Fun is there and also Money comes in your way. I may not as good just the regular students but I know I can be better than them because I have the faith and passion that comes in me.

 Raju Rastogi
was the religious one among these three casts. He came to a very poor and unfortunate family. He has a very religious mother and a father suffering from a disease and has a paralyzed body. During his childhood, he already experienced all the sufferings and poverty in their family. His only dream was to bring their family away from poverty and achieve a brighter future with the use of his knowledge. By pursuing his dream, he enrolled in Imperial College of Engineering. As time goes by, he met his two best friends inside this college. His best friends were Ranchoddas “Rancho” Shamaldas and Farhan Qureshi. Raju Rastogi was afraid of all the things inside the college especially in his professor named Virus Sahastrabuddhe. He was so pessimistic in his life and he was too desperate to cure the disease of his father that was suffering in paralysis in his body. When the day came that his father’s disease was too severe, his friend Rancho tried to help his father. Rancho used his motorcycle together with his friend Pia to accompany the paralyzed body of his father to the hospital. Raju’s hearth was about to explode when he saw his father dying in pain. And when the time passed by, his father seemed to be okay and all of it was caused by Ranchos determination to help save his father. Then Rancho told Raju to be positive always. He said to rancho that friendship is the biggest asst of human. Then Raju slowly realized that thing and he was enlightened with those words Rancho gave him and hugs his friend as tight as he can. As he continues learning in the college of engineering, he had gain lots of experience together with his two best friends. One day, when they got drunk and they were at the middle of the conversation which involved Rancho’s admiration to Pia, they both agreed that if Rancho would successfully tell Pia what he really felt for her, Raju would have to go to a job interview and Farhan would tell his parents especially his father that he really wanted to be a wildlife photographer rather than to be an engineer. Soon, they both concur with these agreements while they were drunk. Raju and Farhan dared Rancho to go to Pia’s House to tell what his true feelings for her were. Rancho and his friends finally reached the house and Rancho slowly told Pia about her feelings. While they were in the middle of conversation, Raju decided to go away because they already knew that Pia’s father which is Prof. Virus was approaching towards them. They pee the door of the house and ran away as fast as they can. Soon Prof. Virus noticed the face of Raju because he was drank at that moment. Prof. Viruss told a police man to find them, but they successfully entered their class room inside the college.  They slept inside the classroom and then they didn’t even notice that they were already late because they got drunk. On that day, Prof. Virus told Raju to go to his office, then Raju and and his professor had a little conversation. The conversation involved the topic of his parents and what would be the result for being expelled in the college where he was currently studying. So far, the professor would not tolerate the incident happened in his house last night that Raju and his friends had been drunk and got into trouble. His professor told Raju that he would be expelled in the college if he wouldn’t follow the instruction that was given to him. The instruction that was given to him by his Professor was not simple. As the story progress, it was revealed that Raju was carrying a heavy burden. Due to his family’s social status, he had to pursue being an engineer to raise his family’s wealth and for them to be able to get out of poverty. He was the only hope of their family. However, his life in Imperial College of Engineering was not easy for him since he experienced the different faces of life which leads him into life and death experience.Together with his close friends, Rancho and Farhan, Raju often gets into trouble. Being labelled as 3 idiots by their director, they still take things in their own way. But among the three, Raju seemed to be the weakest one, in terms of being strong willed. For the reason that their director told them to leave Rancho alone, and even send a letter to his parents, Raju decided to take the advice and avoided them. But then, in the end, it turned out that his friends are the only ones who could help him in his problems, and could encourage him in their own little way. He realized, they were his important friends and immediately reunited to them. But that doesn’t end his struggle. Due to the fact that they are always getting trouble, a certain situation cornered him which led him into confusion. He was told to choose if who should be rusticated, him or his friend, Rancho. Not wanting to let his family down, or betray his precious friend, Raju decided to jump off the building. He was in a state of comatose for two months which made his family and friends to be worried. But then, they never gave up and tried their best to wake him up, and successfully, he did.In those two months, Raju realized the importance of his life, family, and friends. He was able to understand that his weakness was his fear: fear of the responsibilities, and fear of what his future may bring. And from that incident, he was able to stand again and gained new confidence to survive life. He stopped depending on his beliefs and strived hard. In the end, he was able to find a job and live a wonderful life with his wife. There may be times where I experienced some things same as Raju, but still, committing suicide, didn’t and never ever did cross my mind. I believe committing suicide adds to the problem, not solving any problem. Lucky for Raju, he was immediately rescued and saved his life. It even solved his problem regarding the rustication. However, not all people are as lucky as him. If a person commits suicide, the people left behind will be the one to suffer the loss. There are people out there who are struggling and fighting for their dear lives, but others just waste the God given life. Besides, family and friends are there to listen, understand, and help. But the good thing about the character of Raju is that he learned from his mistake. He stood up, once again, to face his fears and overcome whatever may come to his way. He learns to value his life even more. And I think that’s one thing that people should learn and do. As for me, I definitely know the feeling of falling down and standing once again. It’s a great feeling, and you know for yourself that next time you’ll do even better. Cause no matter what life may bring, the most important thing is to keep moving on and live life. Raju was just a poor guy whose father had a disease that has been paralyzed and his mother had only an enough salary to use for his father’s medicine and their daily needs and a sister who cannot get married because they are too poor to offer the husbands family car in returned for the family fortune. I can barely say that Raju had given a big role to his family - to be able to change the life of his family. He took the responsibility of helping his family to get out from poverty and because he was just the one that is studying his family had a big expectation to him that makes Raju to be worry. He started to fear for the future that he might not able to fulfill the dream of his family. This kind of situation really happens to my life. There are always a time that I get pressure that sometimes result to being fear. Being only one daughter and the first to step on college I can say that my family had a great expectation on me. I’m also kind of daughter that really gives value towards education. They can observe it through my hardships during my studies and making a machine problem. I had also felt great pressure during my two years of being an IT student and to be one of the students of the Institute of Computing Department. It is true that almost all the teachers of our department are terror. They give as a hard project that makes my sleeping time almost late, makes me cry sometimes that I almost give up on it. The intense pressure comes into my life when I got a failing mark from one of my subject – the “Programming 2”. During that day I cried inside my parents room and started to hate myself but there was a great encouraged when my mother told me that its okay my daughter you did your best, you can still get the summer class and this time you will be able to pass. Those words were a great help for me in which I was able to stand after I fall. That day I started to make my determination to become bigger and to be optimistic all the time. Right now I’m still doing the best that I could to change my method towards approaching my studies. After all, life is too short to have no fun yet too precious to waste. This instruction involved his parents and his friend Rancho. He was commanded to choose either his family or his friend that would be an exchange for the purpose that he wouldn’t be expelled in the college. At the moment when he was choosing between the two of them, he didn’t choose anything at all rather he chose to commit suicide. He jumped off from the third floor and gained lots of injuries from his body. His friend Rancho helped him immediately and they carried him all the way to the hospital. Rancho was determined to make him alive. He tried his best to help Raju fight for his life at that moment. However, Rancho was successful of all the things he made just to help Raju recover from his severe injuries.  In fact, Raju was determined to continue his dream of becoming an engineer and to graduate and help his parents. He was successful of finding a job interview and soon gained a job with the help of his best friends.   Raju was a good example of a weak student came from a less fortunate family that was slowly uplifted and gained confidence to pursue his dreams in life with the help of his friends. As I reflect myself into his life, I would probably say that I am also like him. The way he was so weak and pressured and so pessimistic when he entered his college life, these characteristics were all also the same to mine when I also entered my college life. During my college life, I was also a pressured student and always look down to myself. I like to have “self pity” every time I got lower grades in each of my subjects during college. Then, I slowly realized that these kind of attitudes where definitely wrong for me. I ask God to help me recover from these sicknesses. Committing suicide was never come to my mind to resolve these dilemmas in my life. I trust God and put my heart just to love my course. I always pray to God that he will always give me wisdom to understand the lessons that would be tackled by our professors especially in programming subjects.  So far, Raju’s life touched my heart and he made me realize the true essence of learning how to overcome stress and pressure. His story teaches me how to become a better person and achieve a life that’s full of good vibes.

Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad.
Every time he appeared, he often overwhelmed other people as well as the audiences with mind-blowing stories. As described in the song at the beginning of the film, he was like a strange wind, blowing the stagnant atmosphere of college. He first appeared in the film when every freshman was bullied by the seniors with such a weird “ritual”. Just by a simple application of basic Physics, he had taught the senior a valuable lesson. He asked questions at right places at right times, simplifying complicated concepts mentioned in the text books, coming up with bright ideas, which are not dared to be thought by other students.  He became helpful and loyal to his friend and remains humble when he always got the first rank during their exam. He didn’t mind if he will be in a last or in the first, for him the most important factor is that you learned. We sometimes only seek of the rank and we didn’t mind if we learned something from our subject. I admit that even me I wanted to be in the top – to be recognized with the other people and be appreciated. When there are times that I’ve been recognized I became boastful. There are lots of students now who had the same attitude as mine when they got on the top they’ve changed. Mostly of it is to become boastful. So much proud to their self lead to selfishness, why? For they become unapproachable, they didn’t listen to your idea because for them they are always right. I think I don’t have this kind of attitude I’m just sometimes become boastful but not in the point that I didn’t listen to the other’s idea. It is better to be in middle than to be on the top that you don’t have friends for they didn’t like your attitude. Just like Rancho, for me friendship is more important. You have to learn how to sacrifice. Only few people had this kind of attitude because as a student there are always a time that we didn’t mind if our friends got down or they get failed. We just think of ourselves. According also to Rancho you want to learn something because of passion. You have to learned it with all of your heart and if you have the passion you never stop in finding new things. For him school is not a race where in there is a border between the winners and the losers instead it is a place of enlightening your ideas and dedicate love to your studies. You have to look for excellence because if that happens success will follow. I also like the way he sees life when he speak the “All is Well” – that also means that everything will be okay that there is no reason to worry about it. For him when circumstances come into your life there is always a solution for it. Yah! He is definitely right just like solving a math problem – there is always a right formula for you to be able to find the right answer. I believe that worrying things will never solve the problem. If I’m going to choose from the three characters I would choose Raju. I can really relate my life based on his experienced. I experienced lots of pressures that come into my life. It only weakens me and I don’t want to let those pressures defeat me especially in my studies. Through the learning’s that I’ve learned from the three Idiots I wanted to apply it. To be not being coward and be able to see things as I wanted to be. He tried to challenge the old pedagogical methods, represented by the Principal, Mr. Virus. The maverick Rancho, according to himself, learned technology just because of passion. He learned with all his heart, never stopping finding new things. He thinks that school is not the race, where exists the border between the winners and losers. It is place of enlighten ideas and dedicated love to study. His idea seems to go against the old system of thoughts deeply ingrained in the minds of many people. Finally, with his bravery, intelligence, and helpfulness, he has conquered one by one, from Raju to the strict Principal. Rancho, however, disappeared without saying goodbye to his friends and his lover. By the flow of the film, the mystery of Rancho was discovered. Rancho is not his real name. H, in fact, was the son of a servant. Since he was small, he had passionate interest in studying, therefore, his master’s son, the real Rancho – a lazy one had him study. The fake Rancho took it as a chance for him to satisfy his love of studying. He studies not for grade, for a certificate, but for his passion for Technology, Therefore, he did not need to scram hard for exam but still ranked first, becoming the most excellent student at school. By the end of the film, audiences found him, under the name Wangdu, as a proliferate scientist, an inspired teacher of a primary school. To Chatur, a classmate of Raju, Farhan, and Rancho, success means a big house equipped with the most advanced accessories, a pricey Lamborghini, with a credit card with a huge fortune. However, to Rancho, it is his success, which is to live out with his passion for technology and to transfer this love to the younger generation. It is nice to see the fresh atmosphere of his self-established school, where students are free to pursue their own passions. The most memorable quote made by the Rancho was “Strive for excellence. Success will follow you.” It is not a quote from one seeing the world. The quote, finally, was proved when Chatur, who looked down on his classmates, found out that the one he was trying to sign a deal with was Wangdu, or Rancho.  The movie ending with the “humble offering” from Chatur to Rancho helps confirm the victory of real passion over the tactical and uncompetitive strategy.  Rancho is someone who does things in his own special way. Even if it means defying their director, being humiliated in class, or stuck in a difficult situation, he never fails to get out of the mess while giving important lessons to be learned. Almost everything he does and says, even if it may seem foolish, has a sense. He makes people realize and understand things thoroughly. He is someone you would glad being around with. Another thing that is admirable for this character is the passion in studying. It was learned at the latter part of the movie that he was an orphan, secretly attending school and such, yet he still managed to gain knowledge. He love studying so much that he will do everything just to learn, even if everything means studying in Imperial College of Engineering bearing other people’s name. But why would it matter? He may not be carrying his own name, yet he will always carry the knowledge that he had. Wherein that knowledge brought him to what he was years after. This thought only shows that all material things could be stolen from people yet the knowledge would be yours alone and no one could ever snatch it away from you. It was also shown in the movie how Rancho cherish his friends especially those who are dearest to him, Farhan and Raju. Since they were labeled as 3 idiots, with him as the leader, his two other friends would always get in trouble. But no matter what happened, no matter his friend turns his back on him, no matter if he got scolded by the parents of his friends, he would never leave them and would always be there in times of trouble. He loves his friends too much that he would help them see what’s right, how reality works, how important it is to consider one’s self and follow what the heart desires. He encouraged them to overcome their fears and face the future with chins held high. He taught them that passion would make everything put into place, and that burdens won’t make a person become stronger, instead they become weak. His words were encouraging enough which earned him great respect from his friends. He taught them everything they could learn from life. Most importantly, he taught them the most encouraging words – pursue excellence, and success will pursue you. Rancho is a good friend not only to his close friends, but also to others. Like MM or millimetre, he gave him money to buy uniform and attend school, and later on, when he had his own school, he invited him to go to his school and become centimetre, better yet kilometre. For the student who committed suicide, he helped him finish his project only to find him hanging himself. The incident caused Rancho’s doubts in the school system and believed that it is not a suicide, but a murder. For the daughter of their director, Pia, he immediately noticed how materialistic her fiancĂ© was. He showed her a precise example of his point and gave her an advice which is to run away. However, that incident was followed one after another which made their feelings for each other to grow and develop. And even if they were away from each other for how many years, their love for each other didn’t end. The love became their link and that’s what made them reunite with each other. I guess that’s how love really works. On the latter part of the movie, it was shown that after their graduation, he started to live a new life, bearing his real name Phunsukh Wangdu. He became a scientist with 400 patents. Built a school full of technologies and teach students, being chased by Japanese investors and even the person who always challenge him when they’re still in college. All in all, his success is beyond comparison. His life shows that in life, passion, perseverance, strong will, and trust in one’s self are needed to survive the struggles and be excellent. Indeed, life can be measured on how a person handles it. If a person like Phunsukh Wangdu existed in this world, I would be his number one fan. Truth to be told, I want to be like him, knowing what to do and say in certain situations, full of wisdom and enlightenments. His words are like can openers and would make you realize that he is definitely right. His actions could make you think that, not everything is taught in school, instead, it is just around us. His foolish acts could sometimes lead into something great which could teach people that we are just humans, and acting foolishness is not that stupid, better yet you could learn from it. His love for his friends could make you love your friends even more. His passion in studying makes you think that working with passion makes work less difficult. His chant, all is well, could comfort you in several ways and could even create a positive thinking. With all of those, it is not difficult to love his character. He is close to perfect that there is nothing that I can compare myself with him. I totally admire his character. Not to mention, I learned a lot from him, and that is, I should be aware of my fears and should gain courage to overcome them. I need not to make my life difficult, but make it easy for me to be able to handle it well. Things may go wrong but with confidence and trust in myself, I would be able to go through them. Lastly, the world is a vast place, I should not let myself drown in my miseries, but enjoy the happiness and joy that life could bring. Rancho had done a lot of good things in this movie. He believes that in order to learn we must be doing what we want and not because of what other forced us to do and we must learn not because we are ought to do but we want to gain knowledge. Student like me would think of what if I was like him, I would definitely gain a lot of friends if I were Rancho. What would be my life if I would experience his entire journey when he was in his student’s moment? If God would gave me the power to become like him, I would probably do it on my classmates especially encouraging them to pursue studying the Information Technology course and not to give up immediately. If the course they’d chose was a big hindrance to their success in the future, then I would tell them to follow their true passion and follow their dreams in the future of their careers.

Which one would you choose?
The three (3) characters in the movie had different personalities which imparts different lessons to be learned most especially, the main character. It was obvious to everyone that he held a great character that can greatly influence everyone. And because of it, everyone wanted to be like him, even me. Who wouldn’t want it? Even though he lived a challenging life, he still managed to be excellent. He is definitely someone I could look up to. However, he would always remain as someone I admire. His character could never be the one I could refer myself to.  Now who would I choose? If I were to choose among the three characters on how my life portrays, I think it would be Farhan. How I really wish it was Rancho, but then I knew for myself that it was totally not. Now why Farhan? I’ve already mentioned above how Farhan’s life describes mine. From not doing anything to defy others wishes, to the fear of disappointing others, down to making own decisions. Yes indeed, it was very much like mine. It may sound a little harsh, but I think it is not, if you are looking at the brighter side.

MEETING (JULY 4, 2015)

On the sharing that happened last July 4, 2015, I learned a lot from that discussion especially on the two mindsets the Default Mindset and the Alternative Mindset. This is the usual mindset that most people have about formal education. Our parents send us in school from Nursery up to college for the reasons that they want us to learn and get good grades and of course to land in high-paying jobs. Getting good grades in school is big achievements in one student life and having this can make the parents proud. As I remember my past years in education life, my mother always proud of me because of my good grades I have got. Having good grades in school can bring us and land us in high paying jobs. Most of the companies looked at first in your performance in school whether you get good grades, average or not. As I mentioned above, most of the parents send their children to school with this mindset – get good grades and land in high paying job. Students imbibe this mindset and carry it with them until college. Most of the students today imbibe this kind of mind set to get good grades and land in high paying jobs. They do not think of a higher purpose of going to school such being an employer someday but instead they support and apply this mind set. Going to school for me is not all about getting good grades and get a high paying jobs but I aiming in my life that someday I could be the boss or the employer in a popular company because I believe going to school is a key to be an employer or a boss in the future. And most of the schools today are subscribe to and support this mindset. It is like a default mindset. We can formally call it the employment mindset. According to my research, the results of the employment mindset can be beneficial or destructive, depending on one's perspective. From the perspective of schools subscribing to this mindset, they take pride in the fact that their best graduates are sought after by companies, offering them attractive compensation packages. In the case of Davao schools, the best graduates are lured to companies in Manila, Cebu, and other prosperous urban cities for the reason that those places offers bigger salary compared to the place where they came from like Davao. In the case also of Davao, the best graduates are migrated into other places like being mentioned above just because of a limited IT company here in Davao unlike those other places or cities. The average graduates try to remain in Davao but find it hard to land in good-paying jobs and find themselves following the route of their better classmates. Yes, I agree that average graduates have difficulty in finding or seeking for a job that offers high pay or high salary. Schools beam with pride when they get feedback that their graduates excel in the companies they are working for. And I can say that I am getting disturbed with this reality. Our best graduates help in the development of other places, not Davao -- and they have reservations in coming back. That is true our best graduates here in Davao did not help for the improvement of our city. This "brain drain" cycle happens yearly and Davao's industries remain thin and their development snail-paced. With this yearly exodus of our best minds to other places, will we allow Davao to remain as a sought-after human resource provider forever? I guess there has to be an end to this problem and hopefully that one day our city will be progressive and will improve.  According to our discussion, this is the alternative mindset of most people. "Go to school, get good grades, create and own a company." "Use your knowledge, skills, core values, creativity and passion to create and innovate through technology." Those people having this kind of mindset envision not only to get good grades, land in high paying jobs but to create and own a company in the future. According to the statement above, that having an alternative mindset and to create and own a company you should use your knowledge, skills, core values, creativity and passion and so that also you can create and innovate technology. The statements above offer an alternative mindset. We can formally call it the technopreneurship mindset. As being defined during our discussion, technopreneurship is entrepreneurship in the field and involved of high technology. It is the healthy interplay of technology ideas, technology skills, management skills and the entrepreneurial mindset. It starts with an idea, which when pursued, has the capacity to be transformed into a viable technology-based enterprise. The cultivation and nurturing of this alternative mindset can start in schools. A technopreneurship track in the IT curriculum can prepare students to be budding technopreneurs. We also discussed the technopreneurship track in the IT curriculum of Davao schools. And I learned that technopreneurship track can lead to the following scenario... Our graduates decide to pursue their technology-based business plans as start-ups in technology-business incubators. Venture capitalists invest in their viable high technology product(s). Their start-ups mature into stable IT enterprises and eventually locate in IT parks or buildings. In the discussion, I have get some ideas and learned that the IT enterprises were able to compete in the domestic and global market and spur economic growth in the locality. The local IT industry blossoms and attracts more locators and investors. And I also knew that our graduates here decide to build their careers and families in Davao and not migrating to other places or cities like Manila, Cebu and etc. Graduates who left Davao return and decide to take root here. During also our discussion Sir Gamboa mentioned this and for the first I have heard this that Davao becomes the IT hub and capital of Mindanao -- and possibly the Philippines, BIMP-EAGA, or even the Asia Pacific Region which I was happy when I heard this statement and I am proud of being a Dabawenyo. And I was happy and overwhelmed with this statement that Davao becomes the home of highly competent and efficient IT professionals with sound social and ethical standards. The Davao schools become renowned worldwide for producing such graduates. Knowing all these mindsets is indeed I can say and  I  realize that someday we will be graduated from this course we could be an employer someday or in the future if we follow the alternative mindset and we could be also an employee if we follow the default mindset or employment mindset. I can say also that we have a greater opportunity and greater edge compared to others because we owned the technology; I mean we have an idea of what is technology especially today that we embrace the technology and we belong in the technology era. Like I said we have a greater opportunity and it is a big advantage to us, so just grab it, work for it and go for it. And aiming for the best ignore the default or employment mindset and go for the alternative mindset so that one day we become the employer and a boss and of course to become a technopreneur like Steve Jobs. I learned the different importance of technopreneurship such as employment creation, local resources, decentralization and diversification of business and many more. Not only that, I have learned also of what technopreneurship means. Technopreneurship as our professor gives definition is a high tech ventures in ICT, electronics, internet, life sciences and biotech. It is also a service firm where technology is critical to their mission and the last is technopreneurship is entrepreneurship in the field of technology. As I comprehend all this definitions of technopreneurship, I can conclude that I cannot be a technopreneur someday because as what technopreneur defined it involves in the field of technology and I think I do not have passion in the field of technology. Our professor also gave us the exact meaning of entrepreneur and entrepreneurship. The first start of discussion we had was on the introduction of the SEED or Self-Mastery, Environment-Mastery, Enterprise-Mastery and Development of the Business Plan. The whole process wasn’t done yet because we are still stuck-up in the Self-Mastery if I’m not wrong for some many reasons but still we are on the process on finishing the whole discussions. On Self-Mastery we were being asked on what are our future plans if ever we finished our courses a self-check if what are the things we really love and what are the things we avoid or hate it is very important to have a business that you love or like a hobby in which you have a great courage that this business of yours would not be a bluff. The topic shared by Sir Randy is all about the Rationale of Technopreneurship (Davao Academe Perspective). It has an outline that consists of five (5) topics, namely: The Usual Mindset, The Alternative Mindset, The Macro Strategy, The Ecosystem, and lastly, the SEED curriculum. As what I have heard while he shares the history of this module, Sir Randy together with his colleagues made this because they want to put Technopreneurship subject in the curriculum of IT Education degrees in every school that offers Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT), Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) and Bachelor of Science in Information Management (BSIM) courses here in Mindanao, particularly in Davao City. Way back then, Sir Randy together with his friend had given a chance to study Technopreneurship in Australia but instead of grabbing the opportunity, they chose to bring the Australians here in the Philippines that have knowledge in Technopreneurship and gather the Deans of BSIT, BSCS and BSIM in every school in Region XI, as well as partnering in local organizations here in Davao. With that gathering, they had meeting, lecturing and monitoring sessions about technopreneurship held in different hotels. The presentation and reviewing of the module with some invited students and faculty has been made and after that, they launched successfully the Technopreneurship course. I really liked their advocacy because they are not doing it for the betterment of their selves but they want to help their society, as well as their countrymen. This kind of advocacy creating a way to make changes in the technology we had experience because through technopreneurship, we can think innovative ideas and we can share our innovations that will surely benefit the people and also, we could earn money.
I really like the outlined topics in the module “Rationale of Technopreneurship” because for me, we could learn a lot in which we could apply in starting up a business.  So the Usual Mindset is the first topic discussed by Sir Randy in his prepared slides. “Go to school, get good grades, and land in a high-paying job”, this quoted line is best describes what usual mindset is. This example of usual mindset can be adopted in education. Mostly the reason why our parents send us to school is because they want us to learn new things to be able to get good grades and to have a good job that has a high salary. And this kind of mindset swallowed by students nowadays. It is not that bad to have a usual mindset and it is not always about getting high salary for being an employee. It is much better to have a vision of becoming the employer, the manager, or the owner instead just dreaming to becoming an employee. We should always dream high, aim high, believe in our abilities, work hard and survive the challenges. Majority of the schools today embrace a default mindset which is the employment mindset. I just realized that since we are young, we must put in our mind to aim high (like to be a president, own a company, etc.) because when we have that kind of perceptions, we are not afraid to try anything just to attain our goals. As I absorbing the thoughts of usual mindset, I can’t help myself in comparing it to the “inside the box” thingy which I encountered in nine dots activity. “Inside the Box” defines the limitations and restrictions in life. It somehow tells that one person is likely to be confined to the four corners of a room and restricts himself in more possibilities outside the box. On the other hand, the “Nine Dots” puzzle tells the other way around. It simply describes that one must not limit himself in exploring, investigating, and experimenting in order to create something that might be useful and benefits many people. It is about going beyond what you can see and accepting the challenge of trying something new. It allows someone to be a creator, an inventor, an owner, an initiator, an author or any term that will describe someone who was the first to discover something new and something useful. Another mindset introduced is the Alternative Mindset. This mindset has a perception of “Go to school, get good grades, create and own a company”. School is said to be our second home where we could enhance our physical and mental abilities. In school, everything that you do will be observed, recorded, graded and appreciated. Students must bear in mind to always be excellent in everything they do while in school because the more they strive hard and work hard to be on top, the more chances they could have to get good grades, get on top of the class and have awards and medals. It is always a fulfilment to the parents if they see their children graduated, be professionals and be able to raise money for living. For those students who have high ambitions, they will not be contented on just becoming employees or workers. They will have the vision to have their own company, have their own workers and employees and be known on their expertise. Alternative Mindset is not just focusing on getting good grades and earning a high salary but it is beyond of the boundaries. I said “beyond the boundaries” because we are not sure if we will achieve to create and to own a company. But what matter most is that we have a perspective to reach this kind of goal. Before aiming this kind of objective we should use our knowledge wisely and effectively, as well as our skills, core values, our creativity and passion in order for us to create and innovate technology. This kind of mindset is called as Technopreneurship mindset. Why it is called Technopreneurship mindset? Since it is identified as a technopreneurship mindset, it deals primarily with entrepreneurship implicated in the field of high technology. It is the well relationship of realistic and reasonable technology ideas and skills, as well as entrepreneurial mindset. The things we made will always start with an idea in which if we then pursued, it would change into a feasible technology-based enterprise. Our schools are the bridge to develop and foster this alternative mindset. Having technopreneurship subject in every IT syllabus can develop and educate the students to be potential and promising technopreneurs someday. Putting up Technopreneurship subject in every IT curriculum in Davao City could make the graduates come into a decision to chase their technology-based business plans and strategies as a start-up in technology incubators. With this, venture capitalists will invest in their feasible high technology products. The start-ups they had created will be established into constant and firm IT enterprises and in the long run, it will locate them in IT parks (a place of high technology companies). I really like this kind of idea having technopreneurship as a part of IT curriculum because nowadays IT enterprises compete and participate in the domestic and global market and impel the growth of economy in the local area. It is so nice to know that our local IT industry blooms and it catches the attention of more locators and shareholders. With this kind of advocacy, our own graduates will come to a decision to build and create their career and profession here in Davao City. Also, there will be a chance that our graduates who left Davao City will come back and settle on to start again. If our graduates will not migrate to other places and pursue their career here in Davao, there is a possibility that through Technopreneurship, Davao City will become the IT hub and IT capital of Mindanao and possibly the Philippines, BIMP-EAGA and the Asia Pacific region. Also, Davao City will become the foundation and home of highly experienced and efficient IT professional with sound social and ethical standards. And for producing such graduates, the Davao City will turn out to be distinguished worldwide. It feels good when those things mentioned above will happen. We are not just helping ourselves to become successful but also, we are helping our nation, the place we belong to be renowned globally. The third topic discussed is the Macro Strategy. A technopreneurship ecosystem in the region should be in place in order to achieve and continue the good things that were describe above. It needs cooperation of the academe, IT industry, government, and business community. And this synergy will continue with the following components: Technopreneurship Programs in the Academe; Technology Business Incubators; Venture Capitalists and Funding Institutions; IT Business Incentives and Legal Framework;  IT Parks and Buildings; Domestic and International IT Market; Domestic and International Locators; IT-Enabled Business Enterprises and Government Agencies; IT-Enabled Hotels and Tourist Destinations; and IT-Friendly Real Estate Environment. Though this kind of collaboration is far from the reality, however there were incursions beforehand that have been attained on the way to this track. We should support our IT industry so that it would improve and develop its plan for the future. The last topic in the outline is the SEED course model. As what Sir Randy said, this SEED course model would really help us in this Technopreneurship subject we have been taken up. It was then elucidated that this SEED curriculum were based on its four main idea that were classify to give growth and advancement on every person that were brought in and acquainted with this course model. The SEED acronym has its own meaning. First S means Self Mastery. So self mastery itself, we can conclude that we must know first ourselves before anything. If we totally master our selves, then we will know those things that we want and the things that we don’t want. We will know our limitations and so much more, we will identify what is our passion. We will be able to discover our strengths and weaknesses; on what field we can have big contributions and in what scenarios we can do less and our presence will be less appreciated. After the Self Mastery, the first E in the SEED is the Environment Mastery. Based on the slides, Environment Mastery means that it is about producing business ideas and looking for opportunities and chances from our environment through serendipity walks, crisis, and trends. Environment mastery will help a person on deciding: on which field he belongs, what are his expertise, what is his passion, and what he really loves to do. He will perceive those opportunities in his environment and not the dilemmas. He should be aware of the things in his environment and should always look for positive prospect and not by a negative aspect. It helps us on how to master our environment and the things that we need to do to expose and reveal our prospective when we engage in turning out to be a technopreneur. On a nutshell, the second E in the SEED is the Enterprise Mastery. According to the slides, this enterprise mastery tells us on how to run a business. It is relevant to the knowledge and awareness of different enterprise disciplines such as creating the business, marketing management, operation management, financial management, and risk management. These disciplines are somehow the same with the topics tackled by Sir Randy in our Project Management class. By having knowledge of the disciplines mentioned above, we could run a business professionally and effectively. The last letter in the word SEED is D which stands for Development of a business plan. Based on the slides, it covers writing the business plan, presenting and defending the business plan, and adding refinements to the presented business plan. To be able to create a good business plan, we should have this kind of strategy on how to write, present and defend, and add some improvements to the existing business plan. As I have read and put that information on my mind, it makes me feel amaze on the things that Sir Randy together with his colleagues has done on Davao City particularly in the IT education. They all have awesome and incredible minds for a reason that they think of an idea that everyone can benefit and it is also an advantage especially for the students who are now getting Technopreneurship as their subject. It is impossible to think but they just did; they were able to gather all the Deans of different schools here in Davao just to put a Technopreneurship subject in IT curriculum. Although they are not that “powerful” people in Davao City, however they used their knowledge wisely and effectively to make changes in Davao City in terms of the things that involves in IT industry. They are influential enough and brilliant minded people that they were able to get the trust of the Deans. It is true that knowledge is powerful, as what famous line of Ernie Baron says “’Pag walang knowledge, walang Power” (If you don’t have knowledge, you don’t power). No one is idiot. Every people in this world are intelligent. It will always depend on how we used our knowledge. Like on what Sir Randy said, it is just like he shares his knowledge on us by doing things that people could gain. His principle is indeed worth to be praised. He said it to our class that he does not teach for living, he teaches us because he wants to share his knowledge upon us and he also wants the lives of his students to flourish. With his actions, I think and I am sure that every instructor wants also their students to step out on our cage and face the world. They want us also to learn and to be wise. For him, he don’t mind if his students are intelligent or not, beautiful or not so, but what matter most to him is the attitude. It is nonsense if you don’t have a good attitude to act. Our attitude will reflect on who we really are. Sir Randy taught us also to dream high. Not to be contented as an employee but we should aim to be an employer. Not to limit our selves and be open minded on everything; thinking the advantages and disadvantages of doing such things. To go beyond the boundaries and explore new ideas that could help us in producing innovative ideas soon. I know that he wanted us to take those opportunities that will surely help us. And I am so lucky and it is also my privilege having Sir Randy as our instructor because a lot of real talk lessons from him I already had put on my mind. Although he always make punishments on my late comer classmates, but still the lesson why he is doing this is to teach us to be more serious and dedicated when it comes to our study. I could always see lessons behind all the things he had done to us. I want to follow his steps in helping the nation by sharing my knowledge to everyone and pursuing to innovate high technology ideas in order to promote technopreneurship in Davao, and even outside Mindanao. It is so nice to imagine if I can also reach the things that Sir Randy has done to his life. I think a lot of hard works and struggles I will face before I could achieve a bit of the achievements of Sir Randy.  It is funny to imagine that I have a plan to be like a girl version of Sir Randy. But there is nothing wrong to imagine and dream. It is just like I am seeking and wanting beyond the boundaries that I know it is too far to happen from now. And, for me it is good because I have a goal and perspective in life and I just want to apply the alternative mindset on everything I will have done in the future. We cannot hide the fact that in every sharing session in a class, there would always be a not so like topic and a most like topic. And we feel that because we listen to our instructor in every detail and we are carried away with what he has shared to us. As what we had tackled last July 4 about Rationale of Technopreneurship, there is an outline topic about usual mindset that I don’t like to be reign in my vision in life. Usual mindset or also known as an Employment mindset tells that “Go to school, get good grades, and land in a high-paying job”. This assumption usually applied in our educational system. Most of the students nowadays have an outlook like this it is because their parents send their children to school with this kind of point of view. And the schools were also embedded this kind of perception. Now I realized that it is not good to have an employment mindset because there is a possibility that we will just be contented to be an employee that earns a high salary and have a good job. It is not that I am against being an employee (most of the successful persons nowadays experienced to be employees) but my concern is that we should aim high and have a big dream to be an employer on our own company. Few people nowadays achieve their goal to be an employer and I want also to be one of them. This topic outline taught me how to dream high, discover new things and not to be contented and satisfied with the things in my environment. It taught me how to strive hard to attain my goals and dreams in life. It shows me the correct way to be a successful and not just to oblige myself to work hard as an employee for a living. Usual mindset are applied by most of the best graduates nowadays because of what they had witnessed and teach by their parents and as well as their teachers when they are still on their elementary days. Based on the slides, it was stated that our best graduates here in Davao City are wanted by many companies and they offer attractive and compensation packages. So with this kind of offers, our best graduates will be attracted on these companies that usually based on Cebu, Manila and Urban areas of the Philippines, and even outside the Philippines. It is so nice and proud to hear that our best graduates that were produced in our institutions have the chance to get a good job in other places and they really excel in their field. But in all of this good news, the saddest thing of this reality is that our average graduate could not find a better work in which it is fit to their chosen field and the bitter part is that they could not taste to have a good job that has a big salary. However, it is alarming that our best graduates work outside Davao City because more opportunities are available outside Davao and bigger salaries and compensations are offered. Though they bring pleasure to Davao City but what I am pointing out is that they must first serve their own place. Although our city is not that rich city and they cannot offer big compensation like what other places proposed, but if we apply the things that what we have learn and try to create a start-up business, then it is a big help for the city. There is a possibility that we are not just helping our community, but also we could definitely help our fellow citizen to start their own business through their ideas. Having this kind of advocacy could make other people to follow you because of its good effect. If we always have this good perception then our industry would develop and grow. We will not be a human resource provider because our graduates in Davao have now a job that also offers big salary through their star-up business. Education is very much important to the lives of the people. As what they have said, it is a treasure that no one could ever steal. Through education, it is a means of improving start-up and technopreneurship industry in our country. It is impossible to achieve if we have lack of educational foundation in the sciences and technology. In order for our country to excel and to become a developing country, we need to have a new technology that can access to the global market and most importantly, to have more investments. If we want to improve and develop technopreneurship in our country, we should need to get better with the culture and system in our place because it is useless to deal with if we know that it is still lack of improvement. So aside from constructing infrastructure to chase for a technological education and advancement, our institutions as well as companies here in the Philippines should have to adopt and implement technology to promote and persuade less usual mode of thinking. To sum up everything I have learned a lot in the discussions.
